3M’s Marlene McGrath Selected as NAFE’s 2016 Global Women’s Envoy

There’s an art to great leadership. If you combine the skills of listening, empowerment and experience, and enable them in the right person, you can create an effective force for change. 3M is fortunate to have a strong champion for women’s leadership and advancement in Senior Vice President of Human Resources Marlene McGrath.

The National Association for Female Executives has recognized McGrath’s strong leadership as well, naming her the 2016 Global Women’s Envoy. The annual NAFE Women of Excellence Awards honor the achievements and accomplishments of outstanding women committed to serving and enriching their workplaces, their communities, and the world.

McGrath’s passion for developing women to take on leadership roles paved the way for 3M’s global Women’s Leadership Forum, an organization focused on accelerating the advancement of women across 3M. Her efforts have made a difference for thousands of women and have benefited the company by improving gender balance at 3M locations around the word. She is known for her long-time support of mentoring women and the changes she has championed throughout 3M to build a more diverse and inclusive culture.

“I can’t think of a more befitting recipient. Marlene is what so many female leaders are searching for, a real-life example who lives the values and behavior she coaches others on,” said Britta Lesaux, Consumer Business Group executive director, 3M Canada. “Marlene keeps me thinking big and encourages me to stretch into the best version of myself.”

NAFE winners are chosen for their vision, courage, compassion, proven success and generosity as demonstrated by how they help other women and girls succeed.

"Business and corporate women who focus on ensuring the success of other women often do this work under the radar, and it is our privilege to call them out as NAFE Women of Excellence,” said Dr. Betty Spence, president of NAFE. “Our 2016 honorees have achieved great -- often glittering -- success in their own careers and businesses, and they are using their power and influence to spur the progress of younger women by sponsoring, mentoring, promoting, and funding them, breaking barriers and changing policies so those coming up have a clearer path to success than they might have had."

McGrath began her 3M career more than 22 years ago as a lawyer in the company’s legal department. She also served as a manager within the Advanced Materials Division at 3M Canada, then director and vice president in human resources before being named to that organization’s top spot in 2012.
