Westside Elementary and Angleton Junior High are two of 52 schools nationwide to receive 3M Ingenuity Grants to help fund projects for classroom development.
“As a corporation that is built on math and science innovation, we are passionate about supporting quality science and math education,” said Dana Dorsey, plant manager, 3M Angleton. “3M Ingenuity Grants help teachers achieve their goals by providing hands-on learning tools. These tools, when used by our younger generation, show them that science is about discovery and can ignite a passion for life long learning.”
Westside Elementary, which received $3,500, will use the money to purchase a server-based software program, FASTT Math, designed to provide students access to practice math skills customized for their learning needs. Angleton Junior High, which received $2,985, will use the money to purchase microscopes and triple beam balances for the science labs.
This year, the 3M Foundation awarded more than $350,000 in Ingenuity Grants to 52 schools in 36 3M communities across the country. The grants, provided by the 3M Foundation, are designed to foster innovative classroom discovery for third through eighth grade math and science students. Teachers apply for the grants for specific programs and may receive up to $3,500 for materials.
In the nine years of the program, 930 grants totaling nearly $2.6 million have been awarded nationally to 605 schools, benefiting over 280,000 students. 3M Community Giving consists of product donations and cash grants by 3M and the 3M Foundation and bolstered by employee and retiree volunteerism. In 2010, nearly $59 million was awarded to education and charitable organizations. For more information, visit www.3Mgiving.com.
