Early assessment helps facilities identify ICD-10 risk, opportunity, and organizational impact
3M Health Information Systems, the worldwide leader in ICD-10 classification, has introduced ICD-10 consulting services, combined with advanced ICD-10 software and analytic tools, to help hospitals take immediate steps to prepare for a successful transition to the new ICD-10 coding standard, scheduled to be implemented nationwide in 2013.
3M’s ICD-10 transition solution includes new releases of the 3M™ DRG Assurance™ Program, 3M’s market-leading clinical documentation improvement program, and the 3M™ Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) System, which have been expanded with ICD-10 concepts and terms. The enhanced software and services help facilities reduce the risk from incomplete or inaccurate documentation. 3M ICD-10 consulting experts also assist hospitals with new ICD-10 modeling and code translation services, clinical documentation assessment services, and claims impact analysis services, all specifically developed for ICD-10 implementation.
“ICD-10 will touch every aspect of healthcare operations and patient care, so the transition is not to be taken lightly,” said Tom Anastasio, senior vice president, 3M Health Information Systems. “Working to improve clinical documentation for ICD-10 should be the current focus of every hospital’s ICD-10 transition plan. Early assessment helps facilities take strategic advantage of ICD-10’s potential for clinical, financial, and operational improvement.”
3M ICD-10 consultants work onsite with hospital ICD-10 steering committees to perform a complete assessment of clinical documentation. Powerful 3M analytic tools evaluate claims data to identify specialties, patient populations, and diagnosis codes most impacted by ICD-10, so that organizations know where to focus their efforts.
During the clinical documentation improvement engagement, 3M provides peer-to-peer physician education and trains documentation specialists on working with physicians to capture more specificity in the patient record. Early education allows medical staff to adjust documentation practices well in advance of ICD-10 implementation. 3M also provides the 3M CDI System, a unique leave-behind software tool that offers clinical documentation guidelines and edits interactively during concurrent chart review, helping organizations to sustain financial improvements, promote productivity gains for documentation review specialists, and further prepare for ICD-10.
More than 800 hospitals have relied on the 3M DRG Assurance Program to improve clinical documentation through complete and accurate capture of a patient’s severity of illness and risk of mortality in the patient record. 3M DRG Assurance clients typically see an increase in case mix index of 2-4%, with an average 4:1 financial return in the first year of the program.
3M Health Information Systems has over 15 years experience in developing and maintaining ICD-10 products and services around the world. In the United States, under contract with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the National Center for Health Statistics, 3M developed the ICD-10 Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS) and the General Equivalence Mappings (GEMS) and Reimbursement Maps.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has set October 1, 2013 as the implementation date for ICD-10, the new national coding standard that will replace ICD-9-CM. Codes based on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), are used throughout health care to record, store, and retrieve diagnosis and procedure information for clinical, epidemiological and quality purposes, and for reimbursement.
