3M Introduces Fiber Aerial Terminal Closure for Direct Spliced Drop Applications

Service Providers deploying fiber-to-the-premise networks now have secure, weather-tight protection for directly spliced fiber drop cables. New from 3M Communication Markets Division, the SLiC Fiber Aerial Terminal Closure 530 with Internal Drop Termination for direct splice drops delivers easy installation and environmental protection with a unique two-in-one housing design.

The new SLiC 530 closure from 3M is an aerial, strand-mount, breathable fiber terminal for FTTP applications, suitable for in-line, taut sheath, and butt splicing configurations.

Like the SLiC 530 closure for factory-terminated fiber drops, also introduced today, the SLiC 530 closure for direct splice drops also features a unique two-in-one housing design for easy installation and additional environmental protection. The new SLiC fiber closure also allows the terminal to be accessed for fiber drop terminations without opening the splice chamber. Locking tabs on the terminal box provide greater network security. Single-piece construction ensures weather-tight protection as well as easy installation and provides access to the splice without removal of the closure or terminal from the cable.

The SLiC 530 accommodates 4, 6, 8, or 12 direct spliced or mechanical spliced drop terminations. A direct spliced drop termination requires that the distribution fiber be spliced to the drop fiber. For mechanical spliced drop terminations, the 3M Fibrlok 2529 or 2540G may be used. The SLiC 530 is designed to Telcordia's GR-771-CORE Issue 2, July 2008, Generic Requirements for Fiber Optic Splice Closures - Free-breathing closures.
