This year, 3M is celebrating four decades of work with the BMW Group, reflecting a long-standing relationship rooted in materials science, engineering problem-solving and automotive innovation.
For 40 years, 3M has worked with the BMW Group to help address automotive design and engineering challenges through materials science. The collaboration began in 1986 with a tape-attached door-sealing application for the 7 Series, or E32, developed to help optimize interior acoustics in the premium segment. For the application, 3M Weatherstrip Acrylic Foam Tape 4202 was used in a pioneering door-sealing system introduced with the BMW Group and its supplier partner at the time.
Over the past four decades, the automotive industry has undergone significant transformation. Automakers and suppliers are navigating rapid shifts driven by electrification, evolving vehicle architecture, increasingly complex electrical and electronics systems, changing consumer expectations and growing sustainability requirements. 3M supports automotive customers worldwide with materials science-based solutions in thermal management, electrical insulation and protection, bonding and sealing, acoustic and vibration management, lightweighting, surface protection and manufacturing process optimization.
“This milestone celebrates what long-term technical collaboration can achieve,” said Marcus Kucharz, 3M strategic account director for the BMW Group. “What began as a focused application in premium acoustics has grown into a broader example of how 3M works with automotive customers to help solve evolving engineering, manufacturing and business challenges. As the industry continues to transform, we look forward to continued collaboration and innovation in the years ahead.”
As the automotive industry continues to evolve, 3M’s materials science expertise remains focused on helping automakers and suppliers solve challenges across design, manufacturing, performance and sustainability.
