3M ICD-10 Code Translation Software Converts EHR Custom Problem Lists

Hospital organizations and physician practices can speed ICD-10 code conversion of electronic health record (EHR) systems with the latest release of the 3M Code Translation Tool (CTT). The enhanced ICD-10 code translation technology from 3M Health Information Systems can now be used to convert ICD-9-based custom problem lists into ICD-10 coded problem lists for import back into the EHR system. The new feature transforms time-consuming, manual translation work into an efficient three-step process that reduces costs and frees IT resources for other critical projects.

EHRs contain thousands of ICD-9 codes and each code requires ICD-10 remediation. “With the October 2014 ICD-10 implementation date fast approaching, provider organizations need a more efficient method for converting EHRs to the new code sets, especially provider-specific problem lists,” said Ray Terrill, senior vice president, 3M Health Information Systems. “The new release of the 3M CTT can save hospital IT departments needless hours of work and resources spent on code conversion and help keep the facility’s ICD-10 transition on track.”

3M Health Information Systems will host a free webinar on Thursday, January 30 at 1 p.m. Eastern timeto demonstrate how hospitals and physician practices can speed ICD-10 code conversion of their problem lists with the latest release of the 3M CTT. The new 3M CTT file translator streamlines the conversion of custom problem lists by taking exported ICD-9 coded files from a facility’s EHR system and importing them into the 3M CTT. The tool incorporates data preservation algorithms to retain key identifiers. Next, the 3M CTT’s translates the ICD-9 codes to ICD-10 and then generates a new problem list file which can be re-imported into the EHR system.

3M CTT is being used for ICD-10 conversion at multi-facility health systems, standalone community hospitals, and payer organizations. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has also licensed the software for use by its Fiscal Intermediaries (FIs), Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) and carriers to promote accurate and consistent translations from ICD-9 to ICD-10 in all of their CMS systems.

The enhanced 3M CTT is part of 3M’s complete solution for ICD-10 transition planning, which also includes ICD-10 consulting services for clinical documentation improvement, a wide range of ICD-10 features and functionality in 3M’s industry-leading Coding and Reimbursement System, and the 3M ICD-10 Education Program, a comprehensive web-based curriculum that prepares hospital staff for ICD-10 coding and documentation.
