3M Named in Top 20 for Best Companies for Leadership

3M has been named to the Top 20 list of companies in the annual Best Companies for Leadership study.  The list ranks companies for leadership around the world and examines how those companies nurture talent and foster innovation in their organizations.

The list is compiled by Hay Group, a global consulting firm that has studied the Best Companies for Leadership since 2005.

We’re building leaders at all levels -- all around the world -- to inspire our employees, lead in our communities, and provide differentiated solutions to our customers,” said Sandra Tokach, vice president, Talent Solutions, 3M Human Resources.  “We’ve embraced technology and have established more global learning centers to keep leaders’ learning timely, collaborative and engaging.”

The Hay Group study found that the best companies for leadership are purposeful and strategic in developing, enabling and motivating leaders throughout the organization to do their best.  Leaders at the Top 20 Best Companies provide clarity around the direction of the organization and importance of both innovation and operational excellence.  They are active change agents in this transformation and focused on building leaders of the future.

“The Best Companies for Leadership recognize that many of the skills once required solely for senior leadership roles — high levels of emotional intelligence, commitment to continuous learning, analytical thinking — are now critical at every level of the organization,” said Ruth Malloy, global managing director of Hay Group's Leadership and Talent practice and co-leader of the Best Companies for Leadership Study. “To excel in today’s highly complex and competitive business environment, the Best Companies are taking deliberate steps to develop and reward these competencies to enable their organizations to achieve operational excellence today, while driving innovation for tomorrow.”

3M has been focused on building leadership capability across the company for decades. 3M has a broad definition of leadership, including thought leadership, process leadership and project leadership, as well as people leadership.

3M ranked #13 in this year’s study, and has appeared on the Top 20 Best Companies for Leadership list five times since its inception, including the #1 rank in 2008.  This year’s survey includes responses from nearly 18,000 individuals at more than 2,200 organizations worldwide.  The survey was based on the organization’s response to an online questionnaire and peer nominations.
