3M Announces 3M PICC/CVC Securement Device + Tegaderm I.V. Advanced Securement Dressing

New system delivers reliable securement without sacrificing patient comfort

3M Critical & Chronic Care Solutions today announced the availability of 3M PICC/CVC Securement Device + Tegaderm I.V. Advanced Securement Dressing, an innovative sutureless securement system designed to deliver enhanced adhesion without sacrificing patient comfort for the best possible experience and outcomes. The new product is featured May 20 through May 23 during the 2013 Infusion Nurses Society Annual Convention in 3M booth #411.

Reliable securement of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs) and short-term Central Venous Catheters (CVCs) is critical in avoiding the clinical, emotional and financial costs of complications. Traditional securement devices can be difficult and painful to apply and remove and can be uncomfortable for patients. Additionally, health care workers in hospitals experience more than 92,000 suture-related needlestick injuries (NSIs) each year, which can lead to significant burden on facilities and clinicians.1,2

Developed through collaboration with clinicians and patients, the 3M PICC/CVC Securement System can be worn up to seven days and was found to secure as well as or better than leading securement devices when evaluated by clinicians in 19 facilities, yet removes gently and allows for improved patient mobility and comfort.

Specific features and benefits of the system include:

  • Sutureless securement device – Silicone adhesive holds securely yet allows for gentle, alcohol-free removal. Application of the device is aided through absence of mechanical doors or wings, the addition of visual cues and the ability to reposition upon initial application for optimal placement. The device utilizes a water-resistant soft-cloth material that is perforated for additional breathability.
  • Tegaderm™ I.V. Advanced Securement dressing – Tegaderm brand transparent film provides continuous site observation as well as a waterproof, sterile barrier to external contaminants.Adhesive-free tabs minimize potential for the product to stick to gloves or to itself and allow for one-handed delivery of the securement tape strip. A reinforced stabilization border maximizes dressing securement, breathability and wear time. A preprinted tape strip helps users document dressing changes.

The device and dressing are combined in a single package, simplifying product selection. The system accommodates the majority of PICC and short-term CVC catheters up to and including 12 French.

“Our new securement system is an elegantly designed solution for sutureless securement that meets unmet needs in the marketplace – so much so that in an evaluation at 19 facilities, we found that 85 percent of clinicians were willing to replace their existing system with it,” said Matt Fryxell, new products marketing manager, 3M Critical & Chronic Care Solutions. “We’re very proud of our ability at 3M to create and connect core technology expertise – such as that in transparent films and adhesives – to bring to market high-quality, reliable health care products that meet the needs of clinicians and patients alike.”
