3M Demonstrates Commitment to Infection Prevention With Debut of Two New Products at AORN

Company introduces SpotOn temperature monitoring system and

Surgical Clipper Professional 9681

3M™ is debuting two products at this week’s Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Congress in San Diego — the new 3M SpotOn temperature monitoring system and the new 3M™ Surgical Clipper Professional 9681.

The 3M SpotOn temperature monitoring system, a new standard in core temperature monitoring, offers clinicians a non-invasive method to measure patients’ core body temperature accurately throughout the perioperative process using a single disposable sensor.

Developed by the makers of 3M™ Bair Hugger™ therapy, the SpotOn system simplifies the existing temperature measurement process while delivering accurate temperature measurement typically associated with more invasive methods, such as esophageal, bladder, rectal or PA catheters.

A 2011 study compared the accuracy of the SpotOn system to pulmonary artery catheters during surgery. The SpotOn system core temperature readings were in agreement with pulmonary artery temperature, with a bias of less than 0.23 °C.[i]

“Clinicians have a variety of tools available to obtain temperature, but are lacking a non-invasive way to consistently measure core body temperature before, during and after surgery,” said Kathy Leith, 3M global marketing manager. “The SpotOn system helps standardize temperature monitoring by eliminating the need for multiple products. Standardization also removes the hassle and costs associated with purchasing, stocking and managing multiple products for the same use.”

Key features of the SpotOn system include:

  • Non-invasive: A single-use sensor is placed on the patient’s forehead in the pre-op setting and is worn throughout the perioperative journey.
  • Continuous readings: Patient temperature is continuously displayed on the system’s control unit, ensuring optimization of warming modalities through real-time temperature data.
  • Temperature trend data:A memory chip within the sensor provides a two-hour continuous visual representation of the patient temperature trend on the SpotOn control unit.
  • Consistent results:The sensor stays on the patient—disconnected from the sensor cable and reconnected to another SpotOn control unit at each point of care—to eliminate variability.

The 3M Surgical Clipper Professional 9681 is the latest in hair removal product innovation.  Paired with the blade’s away-from-the-skin positioning and unique blade design, the Surgical Clipper Professional 9681 combines superior design and performance to remove all types of hair in a single pass.

In a new clinical study presented at AORN, the Surgical Clipper Professional 9681 was shown to have a nick rate of just five percent, compared with competitor rates of 12.5 percent and 25 percent.[ii] In the same study, the Surgical Clipper Professional 9681 was rated significantly more comfortable[iii] and resulted in less trauma to the skin, which helps reduce the risk of surgical site infection (SSI).[iv]

Additional features of the Surgical Clipper Professional 9681 include:

  • Long-lasting battery power:A lithium ion battery provides 160 minutes of clipping time on a three-hour recharge.
  • Battery charge indicator:An LED indicator light provides the battery charge status.
  • One blade:The 3M™ Surgical Professional Blade 9680 blade is effective for standard clipping and trauma procedures. The single-blade approach standardizes clipping protocols by eliminating the need to purchase multiple clipper blades.

“With its innovative design and unmatched performance, the 3M Surgical Clipper Professional 9681 raises the standard of clipping,” said Jennifer Ehlers, 3M global marketing manager.
