3M Health Information Systems has released a new version of the 3M ICD-10 Code Translation Tool (3M CTT) with productivity enhancements, new code mapping features, and an ICD-10 financial impact analysis module to analyze expected reimbursement under ICD-10, the new national coding standard scheduled to be implemented in October 2014. By automating much of the ICD-10 code translation process, the updated tool can help healthcare organizations substantially reduce costs and save time when converting ICD-9-based systems, applications, and reports into the language of ICD-10.
The new release of 3M CTT allows users to extract codes from a variety of documents, find codes via word search, and use a wizard-based interface for step-by-step code translation. A 3M-proprietary analyzer identifies complex coding relationships and provides viable code alternatives to consider during the conversion process. New software features also make it possible to create customized code mappings—ICD-9 to ICD-10 and ICD-10 to ICD-9—for specific clinical and business needs.
3M CTT is integrated with the 3M Healthcare Data Dictionary (3M HDD), a controlled medical vocabulary server, which makes it possible to store 3M CTT customized ICD-9 and ICD-10 mappings, and leverage the industry-standard vocabularies of the 3M HDD to query the maps for ICD-10 data conversion.
“ICD-9 codes are in departmental systems, clinical documentation, reimbursement contracts, super bills, medical necessity policies, and even paper reports and forms—and all have to be translated to ICD-10,” said Hank Kwan, Clinical Terminology Business Director for 3M Health Information Systems. “The new release of our ICD-10 Code Translation Tool is designed to streamline the conversion process so healthcare facilities can focus time and resources on other important aspects of their ICD-10 transition.”
3M CTT is being used for ICD-10 conversion at multi-facility health systems, standalone community hospitals, and payer organizations. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has also licensed the software for use by its Fiscal Intermediaries (FIs), Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) and carriers to promote accurate and consistent translations from ICD-9 to ICD-10 in all of their CMS systems.
The enhanced 3M ICD-10 Code Translation Tool is part of 3M’s complete solution for ICD-10 transition planning, which also includes ICD-10 consulting services for clinical documentation improvement and the 3M ICD-10 Education Program, a comprehensive web-based curriculum that prepares hospital staff for the challenge of ICD-10 coding and documentation. In addition, 3M’s marketing-leading Coding and Reimbursement System has been enhanced with unique functionality that allows coding in both ICD-9 and ICD-10 simultaneously for training purposes. Hospitals are able to code in ICD-10 without impacting their billing process, and collect ICD-10 data while coding in ICD-9 to analyze the financial and productivity impact.
3M Health Information Systems is an international leader in ICD-10 classification with more than 15 years experience in developing and maintaining ICD-10 products and services around the world. In the United States, under contract with CMS, 3M developed the ICD-10 Procedure Coding System (PCS) and the General Equivalence Mappings (GEMs), and produced the initial conversion of MS-DRGs to ICD-10.
