3M Aerospace to Showcase New Products and Leadership in Fire Safety at SAMPE

Industry leader expands flame resistant product line

3M Aerospace will introduce exciting new offerings to attendees of the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE) 2012 Conference, to be held May 21-24 in Baltimore, Md. The company’s leadership in flame resistance (FR) will take center stage, as a 3M scientist leads a session on Fire Safety and several new products are introduced.

3M Aerospace engineer Patrick Zimmerman, Ph.D., will co-chair the Fire Safety component of the Technical Program on Tuesday, May 22. 3M has been active in the development of the FAA’s new policy statement for 14CFR 25.853, through Dr. Zimmerman’s participation in the FAA Fire Testing Standardization Working Group.

3M Aerospace will also introduce a number of new products at the conference which meet stringent FR requirements for interior applications, including 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Void Filling Compound EC-3505 B/A FR and 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Low Density Bonding Compound EC-3545 B/A FR. These products are designed to help aircraft manufacturers eliminate steps, reducing touch time and cycle time. With a combination of extrudability/pumpability and non-sag performance, these products simplify preparation and cleanup, and enable a variety of speedy methods of application.

Also at SAMPE, 3M Aerospace will debut 3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tape 8734NA for Co-Curable Protection, designed to provide a durable barrier against impact and erosion damage on composite aircraft parts. 3M 8734NA Tape offers protection for composite parts in high-temp areas, such as engine composite fan blades and heated leading edges where traditional surface protection products are not sufficient. With this solution, aircraft owners can reduce maintenance costs, increase up-time and enable safer aircraft. Polyurethane Protective Tape 8734NA is co-cured into composite structures representing the next generation of performance and convenience for maintaining the integrity of aircraft composite parts. In addition, a seamless repair paste is available to offer users faster, simpler and more cost effective repairs.

3M Advanced Composites will feature 3M™ Fortified Tooling Prepreg, designed to improve tool cycle life with improved surface hardness for scratch reduction, improved interlaminar shear strength for delamination resistance and improved crack resistance. Tools made with 3M™ Fortifed Tooling Prepreg also have low shrinkage and z-axis CTE allowing for near net molding and decreased spring-back.
