3M Health Care Improves Preoperative Skin Preparation with New 3M One-Step Patient Prep

3M announced today at the American periOperative Registered Nurses 52nd Congress (AORN) the introduction of 3M brand One-Step Patient Prep, a povidone iodine-based patient preoperative skin prep, delivered in a single-use sterile applicator. The alcohol-free solution can be used on both skin and mucous membranes.

As an innovative solution to the articulated needs(a) of operating room managers, infection control practitioners, surgeons, and operating room nurses, 3M One-Step Patient Prep delivers improved efficiency in pre-operative patient preparation. This translates to faster application time, greater resistance to removal during surgery, better drape adhesion than competitive aqueous iodine-based scrub and paint solutions and easy removal during postsurgical procedures.

The two-minute application time of the single use, sterile applicator solution provides the efficacy of a five-minute iodophor scrub followed by a paint. This meets FDA requirements and keeps bacterial counts below baseline, up to 24 hours postprep, helping to reduce the risk of surgical site infections.

Independent laboratory testing has shown One-Step Prep's superior performance through documented bacteria kill after a blood and saline challenge. Unlike other aqueous povidone iodines, One-Step Prep dries to a microbial film that resists wash-off by blood and saline. In addition, improved drape adhesion under surgical conditions reduces the risk of surgical site infections, often resulting from drape edge lift.

"Preoperative skin preparation serves as a front line defense against surgical site infection," said James Ingebrand, business director, 3M Medical Division. "This new alcohol-free solution has broad application capabilities, from torn skin to mucous membranes, while delivering unparalleled efficacy and drape adhesion."
