ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--3M issued the following statement today from Inge G. Thulin, 3M
chairman, president and chief executive officer on the passing of Allen
F. Jacobson, former 3M chairman and chief executive officer:
"Allen Jacobson’s leadership of 3M was marked by strong innovation,
international expansion and productivity improvement. He was an
important leader at a pivotal time in 3M’s history and in many ways
built the foundation for the modern 3M."
Mr. Jacobson served as 3M’s chairman of the board and chief executive
officer from 1986 - 1991 and on 3M’s board of directors from 1983 -
1997. Prior to his appointment as CEO, Mr. Jacobson served as president
of 3M’s U.S. Operations. During his 3M career, he held leadership
positions in 3M’s Industrial and Consumer businesses, and in Europe and
Canada.
Mr. Jacobson joined 3M in 1947 as a product engineer in 3M’s tape
laboratory. In his early years with the company, he held manufacturing
positions at several of 3M’s facilities, and managed 3M plants in St.
Paul, Minn. and Bristol, Pa. He was a native of Omaha, Neb., and earned
a B.S. in chemical engineering from Iowa State University.
